Chamonix has several ski areas, each with its own character:

  • Les Houches – Intermediate slopes, tree skiing, great when the weather is poor

  • Brévent–Flégère – Sunny slopes with stunning views, suitable for mixed abilities

  • Les Grands Montets – Steeper, challenging terrain for advanced skiers

  • Le Tour – Quieter and family-friendly

Book Early

Winter in Chamonix is busy. Pre-book ski hire, lessons, and restaurants, especially during school holidays, to avoid queues and ensure availability.

Muma - A true local favourite. Relaxed, modern, and beautifully done, with seasonal dishes and thoughtful flavours. Perfect for lunch or an easy, stylish dinner.

La Cabane des Praz - Refined alpine dining in a beautiful setting. An excellent choice for a special evening, with attentive service and creative, seasonal menus.

La Calèche - Classic Savoyard comfort food at its best — fondue, raclette, and tartiflette served in a traditional alpine atmosphere. A true Chamonix institution.

  • Fromagerie de la Fruitière – Another highly rated cheese shop offering regional specialties.

Traveling with Kids

For ski school, we recommend ESF Les Houches. Morning sessions usually work best for children, allowing them to learn and enjoy the slopes while you take advantage of the quieter pistes. For younger kids, the morning session is often sufficient, leaving the afternoons free to explore must-see sights like the Ice Cave at Montenvers or the Aiguille du Midi.

Other fun activities for kids include ice skating and sledding in the local area.
